Among the most notable developments are <strong data-start=\"4230\" data-end=\"4260\">Bound4Blue\u2019s eSAIL\u00ae system<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4265\" data-end=\"4297\">BAR Technologies\u2019 WindWings\u00ae<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4300\" data-end=\"4859\">The <strong data-start=\"4304\" data-end=\"4314\">eSAIL\u00ae<\/strong> system is a suction-based rigid sail that harnesses wind power to generate additional thrust, reducing fuel consumption by up to 40% in commercial ships. Unlike conventional sails, it combines the aerodynamic principles of rigid and rotary wing sails with a simplified mechanical design based on three main control actions\u2014body rotation, flap positioning, and active suction\u2014that optimize airflow around the sail. The system operates fully autonomously, requires no crew intervention, and can deliver a return on investment in under five years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4861\" data-end=\"5263\">Meanwhile, <strong data-start=\"4872\" data-end=\"4886\">WindWings\u00ae<\/strong>, developed by <strong data-start=\"4901\" data-end=\"4921\">BAR Technologies<\/strong> in collaboration with <strong data-start=\"4944\" data-end=\"4972\">Yara Marine Technologies<\/strong>, is a high-performance rigid sail system based on a patented three-element aerodynamic design capable of generating 2.5 times more lift than a single-element sail. Across global shipping routes, each <strong data-start=\"5173\" data-end=\"5186\">WindWing\u00ae<\/strong> saves 1.5 tonnes of fuel and reduces 4.7 tonnes of CO\u2082 per day of operation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5265\" data-end=\"5763\">Both technologies showcase the potential of wind-assisted propulsion to cut emissions and drive maritime decarbonization. A recent example of this innovation is the arrival of the <strong data-start=\"5445\" data-end=\"5462\">\u201cPyxis Ocean\u201d<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"5470\" data-end=\"5491\">Port of Tarragona<\/strong>, the world\u2019s first cargo ship equipped with <strong data-start=\"5536\" data-end=\"5550\">WindWings\u00ae<\/strong> technology. This event marks a turning point for the adoption of wind propulsion in Mediterranean ports and highlights the growing role of ports as enablers of green innovation and the maritime energy transition.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5765\" data-end=\"6182\"><strong data-start=\"5765\" data-end=\"5787\">Project objectives<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5765\" data-end=\"6182\">The main goal of these initiatives is to reduce CO\u2082 emissions and fossil fuel consumption in maritime transport through the direct use of wind energy.
