These tests, conducted in April and May 2024, used liquid ammonia combined with diesel and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as fuel in maritime activities.

Weeks earlier (in March 2024) the world’s first dual fuel ammonia test was successfully carried out in the port of Singapore. Due to its success, the Singapore Ship Registry (SRS) granted the vessel’s flag certification, and the classification society DNV issued the “Gas Fuelled Ammonia” certification, allowing ammonia to be used together with diesel as fuel for maritime activities for the first time.

The Fortescue Green Pioneer vessel is primarily used for propulsion and maneuverability testing. These trials are essential to validate the viability of ammonia as a sustainable and less polluting fuel alternative to traditional fossil fuels. In addition, it has served to validate the ammonia storage and delivery systems, as well as the ability of the vessel’s engine to operate with various combinations of HVO and ammonia, representing a crucial technological advance.

From tests that have lasted 10 days, it has been possible to verify the safety and efficacy of the use of ammonia in combination with other fuels, guaranteeing optimal and safe performance in real operating conditions.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is also collaborating with Fortescue to improve the resilience of vessels using alternative fuels against cyber threats by monitoring the operational technology, information and communications systems on board the Fortescue Green Pioneer. In this way, maritime cybersecurity is strengthened with more connected and digital ships.

Project objectives

The main objective of the project is to validate the viability of liquid ammonia combined with diesel and hydrogenated vegetable oil as fuel in maritime activities, reducing carbon emissions and moving towards more sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry.

The tests carried out will serve to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of this new fuel, as well as to evaluate the management of nitrogen emissions. Another important aspect is the evaluation of the resilience of the Fortescue vessel’s systems against cyber threats, ensuring that technological advances are protected against possible attacks.

In the coming months, Fortescue Green Pioneer is expected to play a key role in raising awareness of the need for the global shipping industry to adopt solutions such as green ammonia.

Links of interest

News MPA Singapore

Fortescue News

News Port Technology

Publication date

20th of June, 2024

Project Manager The project is being carried out by Fortescue, with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
