Technological innovation, Digital Twin to boost port efficiency

Project Manager

The port operator UMEX, in collaboration with the Nemetschek Group and its local partner ALLBIM.NET, is responsible for the implementation of the digital twin at the terminal in the port of Constanta.

Project description

UMEX has implemented a digital twin in the port of Constanta in response to the operational challenges faced by this strategic enclave. Located on the Black Sea, it is the northernmost port in the European Union and acts as a key logistics node for goods related to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. This scenario, combined with increasing pressure to manage massive volumes of goods, has put the operational capacity and sustainability of port infrastructure to the test. To address this type of challenge, a platform has been implemented that integrates models of a facility into a digital twin, connecting data from IoT sources and sensors to deliver real-time insights and facilitate data-driven decisions in a single, centralized system.

One of the highlights of the project has been the efficiency in the implementation of the digital twin. Thanks to compatibility with existing BIM models and IoT data integration, the initial process was completed in just one week, while the customization and final adjustments required two months.

Currently, the platform is used to monitor a UMEX warehouse, integrating data from a 400-kW photovoltaic system, the terminal’s SCADA system, and a structural monitoring system. This data is combined to provide a complete operational view, including key processes such as unloading ships and loading trucks, barges and trains. The system not only detects anomalies immediately using heat maps, but also allows users to access real-time data through custom charts and interactive BIM models.

Another differentiating factor of this project is its scalability. UMEX’s solution allows the use of the digital twin to be extended to other terminals under its management, as well as integrating additional sensors and systems, including next-generation port cranes. This future scenario not only improves current energy and operational management, but also prepares the infrastructure for uninterrupted technological expansion.

Project objectives

The main objective of this project is to optimize the operational processes of the port of Constanta and increase efficiency in logistics management. Through the use of real-time data, the aim is to reduce costs and improve the accuracy in the determination of tariffs and the energy and structural efficiency of the port’s facilities.

In addition, the implementation of the digital twin aims to facilitate a transition towards a more integrated and sustainable management. The ability to scale technology to other terminals and incorporate new sensors ensures a flexible and future-proof platform, while helping to maintain stability and competitiveness in a complex and changing global environment.
