R-IGLO: 3D printing workstation created from recycled material from the Port of Rotterdam

Project leader

The head of this project is the Real Estate Department of the Rotterdam Port Authority, which is responsible for re-urbanizing obsolete port areas to create an attractive business climate for new maritime manufacturing companies. To develop this project, they worked together with local entrepreneurs from the Rotterdam Manufacturers District.

Project description

One of the manufacturing companies that has benefited from this port space reurbanization is VertiDrive, a leader in magnetic robot trackers. When they started working there they realized that they needed to create comfortable and well-climatized workstations because of the low temperatures in there.

For this reason, the R-IGLO was developed: An igloo made with 3D printing using PETG material recycled from the Port of Rotterdam and reinforced with 30% fiberglass. It began as a pilot project and since then was incorporated in the Real Estate Department’s portfolio to provide tenants with a safe, warm, and comfortable workplace. The pavilion owes its name to the shape of the dome, with the letter R for reusable, recycled, Rotterdam and Royal3D.

Project objective

To create comfortable workstations that allow to take better advantage of port spaces for new companies, as well as attract others.
