Project to generate energy from the organic decomposition of soil in the Port of Ibiza

Project Manager

The project is the result of collaboration between the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB), Bibo Park-Ibiza Botánico Biotecnológico and Bioo.

Project description

The Port of Ibiza has implemented an innovative biotechnology pilot project for clean energy generation. This system takes advantage of the organic decomposition of the soil to produce electricity through biotechnological panels installed in flowerbeds next to the Botafoc playground.

The installation uses natural microorganisms from the soil to generate 100% natural electricity, thus powering ten luminaires in the public port space. In addition, the project, which began in August and required two months of work, has generated direct employment for fourteen people.

This initiative not only represents a significant advance in the sustainability of the port but is also a clear example of how biotechnology can be used to promote the use of natural resources in energy generation, aligning with global trends towards sustainability and innovation in port infrastructures.

According to the company Bioo, the system generates 23.8Wh of clean energy 24 hours a day. In addition, it also contributes to reducing CO2 emissions by 804 kilograms per year, saves 109,000 litres of water and compensates for the temperature by 4.8ºC in the area.

The project is part of a series of sustainable initiatives promoted by the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) as part of its environmental strategy.

Project objectives

The main objectives of this pilot project are to take advantage of the organic decomposition of the earth from planters to illuminate a garden in the public port space next to the Botafoc children’s playground, and to generate clean and sustainable energy by taking advantage of natural resources, which will contribute to the energy transition of the port.

In addition, it seeks to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of the port, minimizing dependence on polluting energy sources, to promote sustainable practices in port management.

The project also has the ambition of positioning the port of Ibiza as a pioneer in the adoption of biotechnology in port infrastructures, establishing a benchmark in innovation in the sector.
