Pioneering multifunctional robot improves emergency response in the Port of Bilbao

Project manager

The Port Authority of Bilbao is responsible for the project, in collaboration with the Bizkaia Fire Brigade.

Project description

The Port Authority of Bilbao has made available to the Bizkaia Fire Department an innovative multifunctional robot, the first of its kind in Spain, which improves the capacity to respond to emergencies in the port environment and throughout Bizkaia. This robot, operated by remote control, has been designed to intervene in high-risk situations such as fires, chemical accidents and rescues in hard-to-reach areas, minimizing the danger to emergency personnel.

The robot has a water and foam extinguishing monitor with a capacity of 3,000 liters per minute, which allows it to face large fires and act in highly complex scenarios. In addition to its capacity to transport up to 500 kg, its modular design allows different equipment to be assembled and dismantled in less than 30 seconds, and by a single person, without the need for additional tools. This versatility allows the robot to be adapted to various needs, as it can also be used in rescue, evacuation and victim transfer operations, expanding its use in a wide variety of emergencies.

Equipped with optical and thermal cameras with 360º vision, the robot allows remote monitoring of the environment and facilitates the identification of risk areas without directly exposing firefighters. This remote vision and analysis capability is especially useful in extreme conditions or in the presence of hazardous materials, where rapid and safe assessment of the environment is crucial. Its robust structure and water resistance make it an effective tool even in complex operations, thus reinforcing the port’s safety and environmental protection measures.

Project objectives

The main objective of this project is to reinforce security both in the port area of Bilbao and in its surroundings by incorporating advanced technology that minimises the risk to emergency teams. This initiative strengthens the capacities of the Bizkaia fire brigade, allowing them to intervene in dangerous situations with greater efficiency and with fewer personal risks, especially in high-risk incidents where rapid extinguishing and safe rescue are essential.

Another objective of this initiative is to optimize the accuracy and speed of response in emergency situations, improving the ability of firefighters to act effectively and safely in critical incidents. In addition, as it is a modular and adaptable tool, the robot can be used in various emergency scenarios, from rescues and evacuations to the handling of hazardous substances, inside and outside the port environment.

Thus, this project illustrates the Port of Bilbao’s commitment to technological innovation in safety, underlining its commitment to the protection of people and the environment in its community.
