Project description
To establish a new port model, the World Friendly/Port, that accelerates the achievement of various sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda and the entry into the fourth industrial revolution in ports, and that serves as a common framework to unify criteria and analyse their development globally. A WFriendly/Port index will be defined to indicate the level of compliance with the model in ports, providing data and information linked to WFriendly. A web application will be developed for its dissemination and commercialisation. Big Data and Artificial Intelligence will be used to apply the WFriendly model and index at large scale, and thus analyse and process large volumes of information from different sources.
The port model of the future will be based on three pillars:
– Earth friendly/: It will indicate a port’s position regarding the protection of natural resources, the use of reusable and clean energy and its impact on its surroundings.
– Digital friendly/: It will help to understand how ports apply digital transformation and innovation to improve their processes and how they use new technologies for operational improvement and efficiency.
– People friendly/: It is the social pillar that will show how ports approach improving people’s quality of life, both of the port community and of those living around the port.
The seed of the World Friendly/Port Idea germinated during the first open-innovation pilot cycle of Som-Inn Port, carried out between 2018 and 2019.
This idea has recently been selected in the intrapreneurship section of the Ports 4.0 call, so it will receive support consisting of access to idea-incubation or advisory services to facilitate its business growth, established at the regional offices of the incubator-accelerator associated with the «Ports 4.0» Plan to Boost Entrepreneurship for Innovation in the Port Sector, plus fifteen thousand euros to carry out the proof of concept.
The proof of concept will be carried out over a six-month period.

World Friendly/Port aims to define a common criterion that helps ports and logistics-port communities to understand the most important elements for the future of ports, a new port model to look to in order to meet the 2030 Agenda and enter the fourth industrial revolution. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda indicate key aspects that all people and organisations must fulfil to live in a better world. However, these goals need to be grounded for ports and adapted to each type of port.
Expected benefits of the innovation
- That each port can accelerate, adapt and ground the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and enter the fourth industrial revolution.
- That ports can know in an objective and standardised way whether they are working in the right direction and achieving the desired results.
