The project is led by the French company Seaturns, founded in Bordeaux in 2015 and specialized in converting wave energy into electricity through wave power technology.
Project description
The company has developed an innovative technological solution based on a floating system that harnesses the oscillatory motion of waves to generate electricity. This technology transforms the mechanical and kinetic energy of the sea into renewable electrical energy, contributing to the decarbonisation and electrification of the maritime sector.
Seaturns’ solution stands out for its mechanical simplicity, modularity and ease of maintenance, which help reduce costs and ensure safer and more durable operation.
As part of its technological development, the company has reached a key milestone with the launch of Phase 1 of full-scale testing of its demonstrator at the Port of Nantes–Saint Nazaire (France). The prototype is a steel structure weighing 42 tonnes, 15 metres long and 6 metres in diameter, with a nominal capacity of 200 kW.
During this first phase, operations such as launch, buoyancy, safety, and assembly and disassembly of the electrical conversion module have been validated. These tests mark the transition from design to real implementation and allow the company to verify the operational feasibility of the solution in a port environment before its offshore deployment planned for 2026.
Despite its great potential, wave energy is still expensive to produce and exposed to the harshness of the marine environment, which accelerates equipment wear. Moreover, if not managed properly, it may have impacts on coastal ecosystems. Faced with these challenges, Seaturns aims to make this technology more efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly, with the goal of expanding its use and boosting its international deployment.
Project objectives
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the industrial feasibility of a wave energy solution capable of reliably generating renewable energy in maritime environments, reducing operation and maintenance costs and minimising environmental impact. Its implementation aims to establish a new generation of clean and scalable marine energy, driving the energy transition and the blue economy.
