The DigiTank project at the Port of Hamburg is a collaboration between Evos Hamburg GmbH, Schotte Automotive GmbH & Co. KG, the University of Duisburg-Essen, Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V. and ma-co maritimes competenzcentrum GmbH.
In addition, UTV – Unabhängiger Tanklagerverband e.V. and ZLV – Zentrum für Logistik und Verkehr participate as associate members.
Project description
The Port of Hamburg has launched the DigiTank project, focused on improving safety and sustainability in the handling and storage of liquid and gaseous goods.
Started in January 2025, this four-year project seeks to develop a digital twin, implement an innovative control center, and establish a mobile monitoring system for tank terminals.
The innovative element lies in the integration of advanced technologies such as digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor tank operations in real time, optimizing their management and reducing environmental risks.
This tool will allow more accurate planning of port infrastructure, facilitating the early detection of possible failures and improving efficiency in environmental assessment by providing accurate data on emissions and possible pollutants.
In addition, this solution will also have a positive impact on workers in tank farms, who will see their workload reduced, thus generating a positive effect on the attractiveness of the sector. This could help mitigate the shortage of skilled labour in these facilities, incentivising more professionals to specialise in this area.
Project objectives
The main objective of the DigiTank project is to improve safety and efficiency in the storage of liquid and gaseous goods through the implementation of a digital twin. This technology will allow real-time monitoring of operations at tank terminals, optimizing their management and reducing environmental risks.
In addition, it seeks to develop an innovative control center that integrates and analyzes data in real time, facilitating strategic decision-making and improving coordination between the different actors in the port. To complement these improvements, a mobile monitoring system will be implemented that will streamline inspections and increase safety in daily operations.
Another key objective of the project is the automation of processes to reduce the workload of staff, which will not only improve operational efficiency, but will also contribute to making the logistics and port sector more attractive in a context where the shortage of skilled labour is a growing challenge.
