Blue Economy: Artificial intelligence for water quality prediction in aquaculture

Project description

A predictive platform based on artificial intelligence has been developed to monitor water quality in real time and analyze its interactions with aquaculture operations. This technology represents a substantial improvement over traditional measurement methods, still commonly used in many fish farms, particularly in Europe.

The system combines smart sensors deployable autonomously in marine or inland environments with machine learning models capable of analyzing large volumes of environmental data—such as temperature, salinity, or dissolved oxygen—to generate accurate predictions of potential risk events for the crops. Through a remote digital interface, operators can consult predictions and alerts from any location, improving decision-making and reducing reliance on manual and digitally unintegrated sampling.

The innovative component of this blue economy project lies in its ability to anticipate changes in water quality and provide real-time, actionable operational information. This combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and remote visualization enables a more efficient, preventive, and sustainable management of aquaculture operations.

The proposal has sparked strong international interest and recently secured €2 million in investment to consolidate its expansion into markets such as Norway and Chile, where 80% of its current business volume is already concentrated.

Project objectives

The main goal of the project is to improve the sustainability and resilience of the aquaculture sector through the digitalization of environmental monitoring processes.

The project aims to offer a tool that enables risk anticipation, resource optimization, and loss reduction—thus contributing to a more technologically advanced, efficient, and environmentally friendly aquaculture production. In the long term, the initiative aspires to become a benchmark solution for smart water management within blue economy activities.
