The project is a collaboration between the Swedish company Candela Technology, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Stockholm Region (SL).
In October 2024, Stockholm introduced the “Nova”, the world’s first electric ferry with hydrofoil technology, developed by Candela Technology. This innovative ferry aims to transform the city’s water public transport, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional fossil-fuel boats.
The “Nova” uses computer-controlled hydrofoil wings that raise the hull above the water, reducing friction and energy consumption by 80% compared to conventional boats. This technology allows the ferry to reach a cruising speed of 25 knots (approximately 46 km/h), outperforming the fastest diesel ferries in Stockholm’s fleet.
In addition to its energy efficiency, the “Nova” operates on 100% renewable electricity and produces minimal wake, allowing it to sail at high speeds within urban boundaries without negatively affecting the aquatic environment. Its quiet and emission-free design contributes to the reduction of noise and air pollution in the city.
The ferry can accommodate up to 30 passengers and has been designed to improve connectivity between the suburb of Ekerö and central Stockholm, reducing travel time from one hour to just 30 minutes. This pilot project, which will run until August 2025, will assess the feasibility of deploying this technology on a larger scale in Stockholm’s public transport system.
The main objective of the project is to boost water public transport in Stockholm by implementing electric hydrofoil technology, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional boats.
In addition, the project aims to improve the efficiency of public transport by reducing travel times and offering a more comfortable and quieter travel experience for passengers.
The initiative also aims to assess the feasibility of expanding this technology to other routes and cities, positioning Stockholm as a leader in innovation and sustainability in urban shipping.
