Comprehensive software for support in port management through automatic drone systems

The project is responsible for the Port Authority of Tarragona and Octocam maps.

Project description

The Port Authority of Tarragona has been an operator of drones since 2021 to use them as a technological tool to improve the port’s comprehensive security. Currently, the Port Authority of Tarragona has 20 qualified pilots and has the following equipment:

  • 1 Ud DJI Matrice 300 RTK with a 2 Zenmuse H20T camera.
  • 2 Ud DJI MAVIC 3T.
  • 1 Ud DJI AIR 3.
  • 2 Ud DJI Mini 3 pro.
  • 2 Smart battery charging stations.
  • In addition to a HAIVISION unit to send images in real time from the drone to the port control center and emergency room.

Octocam is a company specialized in capturing massive data for the digitization of environments using drones.

Since 2023, the Port Authority has made a firm commitment to drones, implementing a UAS unit in the Port Police aimed at improving port surveillance and protection, emergency management and maritime pollution control

At the end of 2023, the Port Authority of Tarragona began working on a pilot project, in collaboration with Octocam, consisting of the characterisation of solid bulk pallets using automatic drone flights, with the aim of having data related to the area of occupation and volume of material for this type of pallet.

As a result of this first collaboration and given the potential benefits of the software, the Port Authority together with OCTOCAM, have presented a project for the call for projects in the commercial phase of PORTS 4.0, currently in the evaluation phase, in order to expand the features offered by this software called Amelia.

The new functionalities that will be developed are aimed at:

  • Count of pallets of vehicles in the field.
  • Container count in terminals.
  • Temperature control of solid bulk pallets.
  • Improving port security by detecting unauthorized people and vehicles.
  • Monitoring and control of port infrastructures and possible effects on them due to adverse weather phenomena.

The use of automatic drone flights for these new functionalities will allow an improvement in the efficiency of processes, through their automation. The innovative nature of this project has an impact on automation, the use of AI, operational efficiency, the improvement of the safety and reliability of processes, the competitiveness and sustainability of the proposed solutions.
