The project leader is the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
The project consists of the complete digitalization of the Antwerp-Bruges port area by implementing an extensive network of digital cameras and radars. With the aim of improving the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic, the digitization of the entire existing infrastructure has been carried out, allowing a constant monitoring of the port area and port movements. Following the recently launched drone network, this represents another important step towards the realization of a complete digital nervous system covering the monitoring of the entire area.
The network is composed of 460 cameras and 22 radars strategically located in the port. These devices are directly connected to the Antwerp Coordination Center, providing a comprehensive, real-time view of all port activity to both Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and the Harbour Master’s Office. The images can also be shared, viewed, and analyzed by security services and other authorities when necessary. The cameras are also equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) specially designed to recognize ships.
In addition, thanks to the digitization of the entire network, it is also ready to connect to APICA (Advanced Port Information and Control Assistant), the port’s digital twin. This digital copy of the entire port area provides a scan every second to create a real-time picture of what is happening in the port based on thousands of data obtained from an extensive network of cameras, sensors, and drones.
The combination of all the data generated in real time using cutting-edge technologies aims to increase situational awareness to move towards predictive behavior and guidance, also improving coordination and decision making within the port. Therefore, this project highlights the innovation strategy of the Port of Antwerp and its commitment to move towards Smart Ports.
The main objective of the project is to move towards the complete digitization of the infrastructure of the Antwerp-Bruges port area by implementing a new network of cameras and radars combined with the existing network of drones and sensors. In this way, it is intended to optimize the management of maritime traffic while ensuring safe maritime traffic.
