Project description
The SEAMLESS project, co-financed by the European framework program Horizon Europe, is an initiative focused on developing innovative solutions and advanced technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and automation of multimodal freight transport systems.
The initiative seeks to improve the safety of multimodal transportation systems through the development of advanced traffic control technologies, information and communication systems, and risk management solutions. This initiative also focuses on improving the energy efficiency of cargo transportation systems through the implementation of hybrid propulsion systems and energy management systems.
In terms of automation, the SEAMLESS project seeks to move freight transport by road to waterways through the development and integration of autonomous systems in loading and unloading processes, tracking and monitoring, and the integration of autonomous vehicle systems.
The project kick-off meeting was held in mid-February in Brussels.
Objective of the innovation project
The main objective of the project is to develop and adapt the remaining technological components to create a fully automated and economically viable freight transport service that can be applied to both short sea shipping and inland waterway transport, creating an alternative, cost-effective and respectful with the environment, to the traditional transport of goods by road.
