Project lead
The project is led by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders.
Project description
China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) unveiled this September the design of the world’s largest containership, with a capacity of 27,500 TEU. This project marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry, not only for its size but also for its focus on sustainability and technological innovation. It has also received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society DNV at the SMM Maritime Fair in Hamburg.
The project emerged in a context of growing global demand for greater cargo capacity and operational efficiency in maritime transport. This new containership responds to the need to transport large volumes of goods more efficiently and with lower environmental impact. CSSC has designed the vessel with a clear focus on sustainability, using advanced technologies to optimise fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. This is especially relevant at a time when the shipping industry faces regulatory and market pressures to reduce its carbon footprint.
The most notable innovative element of this containership is its ability to use cleaner alternative fuels, positioning it as a leader in the transition towards more sustainable maritime transport. The containership is designed to be equipped with a dual-fuel engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and with onshore power supply (OPS) capability, which will allow it to comply with IMO carbon emission reduction regulations once its construction is completed.
Regarding the project phases, CSSC began with an extensive research and development period to ensure that the vessel design not only met capacity standards but also incorporated the latest and most innovative technologies in energy efficiency and sustainability.
Project objectives
The main objective of the project is to revolutionise the maritime transport industry through the development of a containership that not only increases cargo capacity but also leads the transition towards more sustainable and innovative maritime transport.
Through the implementation of innovative technologies that enable the use of alternative fuels and automated loading systems, CSSC aims not only to reduce the industry carbon footprint but also to set new standards of operational efficiency at ports. This project stands as an example of how innovation can drive sustainable development in the maritime sector.
