Project Description
VoltSafe was recently selected by the Blue Economy Incubator of the Port of San Diego, which supports sustainable and innovative initiatives applicable to the blue economy.
The startup has developed a new generation of magnetic electrical plugs that replace traditional metal pins with a magnetic coupling and smart connection system. This technology eliminates the risk of electrical arcs, shocks, and corrosion, dramatically improving safety in marine environments.
Initially designed for marinas and recreational boats, the system can also be applied to auxiliary port service vessels, ferries, and tugboats using shore power connections. It allows safe plug-in and unplugging even under wet or moving conditions, as the connection only activates when fully coupled.
The system also integrates digital monitoring, collecting real-time energy consumption data, enabling automatic billing, sending disconnection alerts, and allowing remote management by port operators. This turns the port’s electrical infrastructure into a smarter, more efficient tool that reduces costs and risks.
Another key advantage is that the magnetic connector automatically releases if the vessel moves without manual disconnection, preventing damage to both the boat and the infrastructure. Unlike traditional systems, this innovative connection has no exposed metal elements and prevents hidden corrosion that often leads to electrical failures or fires in marinas.
Project Objectives
The main goal is to enhance the safety and sustainability of electrical connections in port and marine environments, proving that magnetic technology can reliably replace conventional plugs.
The project also aims to digitalize marina energy management and reduce the risk of accidents, incidents, and energy losses. Its implementation seeks to set a new standard for maritime electrical safety while contributing to the electrification and decarbonization of the nautical sector.
