The project has been developed by the Port of Oakland (California) in collaboration with the company Parsons, specialized in digital traffic and transportation management solutions. It also received support from the California Office of Economic and Business Development (GO-Biz), the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC), the City of Oakland, and the California Department of Transportation.
Project Description
The Port of Oakland has launched a set of real-time digital panels on its website and the Oakland Portal mobile app, aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and planning of port operations.
This new digital infrastructure provides updated information on several key aspects of the port’s operations, such as vessel and cargo dwell times. It also provides instructions for returning empty containers; that is, real-time information to truckers on where and when to return empty containers, according to the shipping company and the corresponding terminal. This way, unnecessary trips are avoided, time and fuel are saved, and the port’s traffic remains fluid and efficient. Finally, it includes a map of the Port of Oakland’s maritime services, the terminals they use, transit times, and shipping alliances, improving the port’s planning and connectivity with other international routes.
The project is part of the FITS (Freight Intelligent Transportation System) initiative, a public-private collaboration aimed at driving digitalization and intelligent integration of the logistics chain. The platform uses Parsons’ iNET® advanced traffic management software, which processes and visualizes real-time data to optimize circulation and port management.
Thanks to this new tool, carriers, logistics operators, and port community members have real-time information that helps them make data-driven decisions, anticipate issues, and reduce costs and emissions associated with inefficient travel. The Port of Oakland plans to incorporate new panels and functionalities in the future, establishing itself as a more predictive, efficient, and sustainable port.
Project Goals
The main goal is to improve coordination and transparency of port operations through an integrated digital infrastructure that is accessible in real time. At the same time, the project aims to promote the digitalization of the logistics chain, encourage data-driven decision-making, reduce the environmental impact of operations, and promote more efficient and sustainable management.
