Project description

In May 2025, Norfolk Southern and the Port of Virginia launched the country’s first RailGreen Corridor, an innovative initiative that uses advanced biofuels and blockchain technology to reduce the carbon footprint of freight rail transport. This corridor connects the Port of Virginia with major distribution hubs along the U.S. East Coast through environmentally optimized rail routes.

The project incorporates the use of B20 biodiesel in locomotives and employs blockchain-based traceability solutions to provide customers with accurate and verifiable data on the emissions avoided on each trip. This not only enhances transparency in supply chains but also enables companies to make more sustainable decisions based on reliable information.

The RailGreen Corridor represents a significant step toward decarbonizing land transport linked to ports and aligns with the sustainability goals of both the Port of Virginia and Norfolk Southern. This joint action strengthens the role of rail transport as a cleaner alternative to road freight.

Project objectives

The main objective of the RailGreen Corridor is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from port-rail transport by using biofuels and digital traceability technologies. The initiative aims to foster a cleaner, more efficient supply chain aligned with the climate commitments of the logistics sector.

In addition, the project seeks to position the Port of Virginia as a national leader in green innovation and to encourage the adoption of similar solutions across other U.S. logistics corridors, reinforcing the role of ports as engines of sustainable transformation.
