Project description
This March 2025, the Port of Alicante has launched a pilot bioremediation program to improve the quality of the water in its fishing basin. The initiative consists of the installation of a biofilter made from native Mediterranean algae, which allows excess nutrients and heavy metals to be removed from port waters, thus favouring a cleaner and healthier ecosystem.
This innovative system, developed by Mediterranean Algae Technologies, not only acts as a natural water purifier, but also allows real-time monitoring of the quality of the marine environment, facilitating a more efficient management of the port environment. In its first year of implementation, the biofilter is expected to purify up to 30,000 cubic meters of water, marking a milestone in the application of nature-based technologies within the maritime sector.
The concession of this project has been facilitated by Alicante Port Innova, which has supported this initiative following its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the port. This organisation works to improve the competitiveness of port services, optimise logistics and promote collaboration between companies, public entities, educational centres and researchers.
Project objectives
The main objective of this pilot program is to improve water quality in the Port of Alicante through an innovative biotechnological solution. The initiative seeks to consolidate the use of bioremediation as an effective tool for the regeneration of the marine ecosystem, reducing heavy metal pollution, promoting a healthier environment for biodiversity and reinforcing its commitment to the blue economy and the transition to greener practices in the management of maritime spaces.
