Port of Tarragona as facilitator of two innovative Ideas of the Ports 4.0 call

On February 10, 2025, the provisional resolution of the Ports 4.0 Ideas 2023 call was made public, with a total endowment of €750,000. Of the 80 proposals received, 47 have been approved, each of which will receive €15,000 to be developed. 

In two of the selected Ideas, the Port Authority of Tarragona collaborates as a facilitating agent. This means that the pilot tests will be carried out within the scope of the Port of Tarragona. 

“MICROWORLD_PORTS” is the idea presented by EURECAT in collaboration with the University of Turku (Finland), Tokyo Medical and Dental University (Japan) and Tohoku University (Japan). The aim of this idea is to identify bacterial strains capable of biodegrading plastics (microplastics and nanoplastics) and the tests are planned to be carried out in the Port of Tarragona and the adjacent coast. 

“Digital Twin Platform for Maritime Operations and Port Services” is the idea presented by the companies MC VALNERA and KAYZTEN ANALYTICS. It focuses on the development of a software platform that enables a digital twin planner to improve the efficiency of maritime operations and port services, based on data analysis techniques and process optimization and scenario simulation. The main objective of this idea is to optimize stopover times and related activities on the sea side and port terminal berths, with special emphasis on port and technical-nautical services.  

The Port of Tarragona promotes innovation, giving its support as a facilitating agent to innovative ideas and projects to solve present or future needs of the logistics-port community.
