The project is led by TECO 2030, a Norwegian cleantech company, Umoe Mandal, a Norwegian shipbuilder and the Norwegian Maritime Authority.
The Norwegian Maritime Authority has approved the application jointly submitted by TECO 2030 and Umoe Mandal for the first stage of design and construction of a hydrogen-powered high-speed ferry.
The main differentiating and innovative element of this ferry will be its ability to operate entirely with hydrogen fuel cells.
It also features a high-speed vessel design that uses Surface Effect Ship (SES) technology, i.e. an air-cushioned catamaran design. This technology takes advantage of the air trapped between the ship’s hull and the water’s surface to create an air cushion that significantly reduces friction between the vessel and the water, allowing the vessel to travel faster and more energy efficiently compared to traditional ships.
This eliminates climate gas emissions and reduces fuel consumption by more than 55% compared to today’s high-speed passenger ferries that use fossil fuels.
The Norwegian government wants to implement the zero-emission requirement for high-speed ferries from 2025. The design of this ferry meets this requirement.
Besides, it will be used as transport for the crew of Umoe Mandal (CTV) and its design will allow for efficient and fast navigation, with a service speed of 35 knots and a minimum range of 160 nautical miles. CTVs are often used during construction, maintenance, and operations at offshore wind farms.
Both its design and technology ensure very high fuel efficiency and sufficient range to sail a complete route without stops to recharge, unlike conventional battery-powered boats.
Currently, the project has completed the first stage of design following the procedures required by the International Maritime Organization’s IGF code and is intended to be operational from 2025.
The main objective of the project is the design and construction of a high-speed ferry powered by hydrogen, to achieve a sustainable transport alternative with 0 emissions and high efficiency, capable of transporting up to 275 passengers and operating safely under ocean conditions.
