Alert system for the recovery of containers fallen into the sea

Project Manager

The people responsible for this project are the Port of Castelló and the startup COBS (Container Overboard System).

Description of the project

COBS, Container Overboard System, is an innovative initiative designed to address the challenge of container loss at sea. The project consists of a system that immediately alerts of containers falling into the sea. Identify which containers have been lost and report their location in real time. Thanks to its buoyancy system, it prevents containers from sinking, making it easier to rescue both the container and the goods it is transporting.

For the container location and tracking system, COBS uses low-altitude satellites, which means efficient connectivity at a low cost. This system is installed in the bottom slots of the container, so it is not invasive or reduces the cargo space inside.

The project has successfully completed its proof of concept, reaching the TRL3 technology maturity level. The results obtained support the viability of the buoyancy system and associated technologies for warning and localization. In addition, work has been carried out on the development of the business model, establishing strategic agreements with various companies in the maritime traceability systems sector. These agreements will expand the capabilities of the devices and their potential application in other contexts.

COBS was one of the startups whose project was selected in the last edition of the Ports 4.0 call in the category of idea development, which allowed them to receive 15,000 euros for its development. The Port of Castelló has acted as a facilitator of the project, providing technical and business advice, as well as facilitating access to the port community and private agents of direct interest to it.

Objectives of the project

The COBS project, Container Overboard System, supported by PortCastelló, aims to mitigate the environmental and economic impact of the loss of containers at sea by developing an efficient alert and tracking system for containers that have fallen overboard. In addition, it seeks to contribute to sustainability and efficiency in port management through the implementation of innovative solutions.
