Maritime Emissions Portal in the Port of Sudeste

Project Leader

The project is a collaboration between the Port of Sudeste (located in Itaguai, Rio de Janeiro) and RightShip.

Project Description

The Port of Sudeste has implemented  RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP), marking the first time this innovative technology has been used in Latin America. This portal allows calculating the emissions of ships and detecting opportunities to reduce the environmental impact.
The MEP portal combines ship movement data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and RightShip’s unique ship knowledge data to identify problem areas and opportunities to reduce environmental impact.

The innovative solution helps ports and terminals effectively measure and manage their emissions and supports decarbonization strategies that align with global, regional and national goals. The MEP is a digital solution that combines proprietary data from RightShip’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) classification, including vessel specifications and additional energy-saving equipment, with daily automatic vessel positioning data.

The technology of this tool is based on using innovative heat maps and zoning technology that provide a clear environmental profile over any time period, allowing practical decisions to be made to manage emissions levels.  It has customizable elements depending on the characteristics of each port and can analyze up to 16 different types of emissions.

The Port of Sudeste, which began operations in 2015, is designed to handle up to 50 million tonnes of solid bulk cargo per year, mainly iron ore. The implementation of RightShip’s emissions portal not only represents a significant technological breakthrough for the Latin American region, but also highlights the port’s ability to integrate innovative solutions into its logistics operations. This integration of the MEP into the port’s day-to-day operations underscores its role in environmental leadership within the maritime and port sector, marking a milestone in the management and control of emissions in the region.

Objectives of the project

The Port of Sudeste has set out to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The MEP portal provides the Port of Sudeste with a tool to monitor and reduce these types of emissions as part of its broader decarbonization strategy.

This collaboration embodies the port’s commitment to sustainability while representing a significant milestone in RightShip’s vision to promote a cleaner maritime industry.
