The project leader is the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has completed its first methanol bunkering operation, marking an important milestone on its way to becoming a multi-fuel port. During this operation, carried out on 1 June, 475 metric tonnes of methanol were supplied from the Tamariva barge at Proman Stena Marini to the SEA-tank terminal.
In addition to the first methanol bunkering, the port is making progress in implementing innovative technologies and sustainable fuels with less environmental impact. For example, a tugboat in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has already been converted to run on methanol, with the installation of dual engines that allow its operation with both methanol and conventional fuels. In addition, the construction of the Hydrotug, the first tugboat powered by combustion engines that run on hydrogen in combination with diesel, has also been announced, demonstrating the port’s commitment to the adoption of clean and sustainable technologies.
This pioneering initiative represents a significant step towards marine fuel diversification and the transition to more sustainable energy options, positioning the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as a leader in the adoption of sustainable marine fuels. In addition, it also contributes to the momentum of the maritime industry towards more environmentally friendly practices, helping to create a 0-emission port.
The Port of Antwerp aspires to become a full-fledged multi-fuel port, where maritime and inland shipping ships can be supplied not only with conventional fuels, but also with low-carbon alternatives, such as methanol, hydrogen or electricity, by 2025.
This innovative initiative is perfectly aligned with the strategic objectives of the port, and seeks not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental sustainability, but also to promote the adoption of cleaner technologies and practices in the maritime sector. In addition, the project seeks to establish the port as a benchmark in the implementation of advanced energy solutions, promoting innovation and collaboration in the port industry at an international level.
